77,220 square miles with prairies, streams, grasslands, forests, and rolling plains. Farming and ranching are profitable in the state with hundreds of wheat and corn fields occupying a significant portion of the land. Nebraska is also known for being the home of several famous people including former President Gerald Ford and Malcolm X.
In contrast to all the attributes above, Nebraska residents are struggling with the burden of drug and alcohol-related problems. In fact, methamphetamine and alcohol abuse are the two most prominent drug threats in the state today. For instance, about 27.5% of Nebraskans engage in binge drinking. Also, the state ranks 5th in the nation for methamphetamine production.
Of course, Nebraska is also struggling with its share of heroin, opioid, cocaine, and club drug problems. Let’s take a look at those statistics.
Addiction Statistics in Nebraska
International drug cartels keep drugs flowing through Nebraska, especially meth. But, the meth problem isn’t the only area of concern when it comes to overdose deaths or addictions in general. Here are a few of the facts about Nebraska’s drug situation:
- Drug overdoses claimed 149 lives in Nebraska in 2015.
- Opioids were responsible for 54 of those deaths.
- The number of opioid-related deaths increased to 13.0 per 100,000 in 2016.
- Meth was involved in 93% of drug prosecutions last year.
- Omaha police made 668 meth-related arrests last year.
- Parental meth abuse has sent more children to foster care than any other drug.
- More than 682 people died from alcohol-related automobile crashes last year.
- One in five Nebraska high school students admitted drinking in the past month.
- About 11.7% of high school students reported smoking marijuana in the past 30 days.
- About 7.01% of residents admitted illicit drug use in the past month.
Nebraska’s overdose deaths rank lower than the national average. But, we can see from the facts above that they still have a major problem in the state. Recently, SAMHSA awarded the state $2 million to help tackle the opioid crisis. Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts had this to say about the award:
“The opioid epidemic is taking hold across the country, but we have an opportunity to be proactive, focus on prevention and treatment and raise awareness now to help stop opioid abuse from reaching crisis levels here.”
