I attended HLA for 24 months. I saw the school go from abolutely horrible to a little less than absolutely horrible. Given few recreational activities, students often fell into the same behavioral patterns that led to their admission in the first place. Although there were a few staff members that made a positive difference during my stay, more of them took a sadistic and inhumane approach to their jobs as counselors, teachers, and leaders - instead of mentors, they were antagonists. I left HLA with a distrust toward authority and people in general. My issues are much worse now than before I attended.
I am writing this review to inform perspective parents that there are most certainly better options for their struggling children. Please pursue a nurturing therapetic environment rather than this shame-based program. Your child will be ever grateful and, more importantly, much better off far into adulthood.
