Philosophy

Dr. Marshak’s method is a researched, science-based treatment. For many years Dr. Marshak has pioneered treatment based on DNA testing of specific genes that predispose addiction. The results of his studies, which are on-going, allow him to tailor treatment of each individual client based on their unique DNA configuration. In addition, the exercise component of the Marshak Method is based on combined elements of ancient yoga teachings which Dr., Marshak has personally chosen for their effectiveness. His (gourmet) nutritional regimen, which excludes sugars and foods made with white flour or corn, is based on the low glycemic index and induces a stimulatory reward. Natural food supplements integrated with specific exercises are given to neutralize genetic deficiencies. The goal of the Marshak Method is to quickly and efficiently restore the chemistry of the brain, which has been ravaged by drugs and alcohol, and to rejuvenate the body’s reward system so that pleasure is once again derived from normal human activities such as eating, exercising, working, shopping, sex, family, friends, travel, sports, and nature. One of the first signs of recovery is the ability to once again sleep soundly each night. The Marshak Clinic in Moscow is renowned for its success rate. In two follow up studies heroin addicts (who comprise 70 per cent of past clients), both taken 2 years after completion of treatment, the majority were found still sober. The Marshak Clinic in Malibu is an elegant and completely private location, high in the hills of above the Malibu Canyons, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The residential component is a highly structured comprehensive 28 day program. Clients emerge from the 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily treatment program with a healthy new lifestyle, ready to cope with future triggers and avoid relapse. A unique 30-60 day transitional program follows. Except for those in the detox process--while in the detox process--the Clinic operates on holistic principles.

Methodology

THE MARSHAK METHOD™ Substance abuse causes damage to the brain’s all-important mood regulatory system. The patented Method is designed to holistically repair this system, and provide clients with the tools required to sustain proper functioning after treatment. The Five Modalities of the Marshak Method’s Integrated Treatment Program 1) The Marshak Method Exercise Program is based on a unique combination of yoga exercises, carefully chosen by Dr. Marshak over the years, and specifically designed to enhance the mood of the client and sustain the resulting sense of well-being. 2) Bio-Active Food Supplements compliment the Marshak Method Exercise Program. A regime of completely natural food supplements enhances the ability of the exercise regime to elevate the mood. 3) Confidential Genetic Testing identifies variations in a number of genes which can predict predisposition to addictive disorders. Both the exercise program and the bio-active food supplements are individually tailored for each client based on the results of genetic testing. 4) The Marshak Recovery Diet, based on low glycemic principles, minimizes mood swings, and is designed to make our clients energetic rather than sleepy after meals. 5) Psychological Rehabilitation is based on the principals of the Twelve Step program and includes daily group and individual sessions with experienced therapists. During the psychological program clients acquire sober thinking and decision making skills. Clients learn how to be responsible, organize their lives efficiently, accomplish everyday tasks in a timely manner. At the Marshak Clinic, clients have a full daily schedule. The day begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 11 p.m. There is little free time. All modalities are integrated into one comprehensive program which all clients follow. Each part of the schedule has been carefully designed to help clients efficiently achieve long term sobriety. Clients learn the essentials of each modality as well as how to identify and handle the tipping points of his/her addiction. Clients are taught how to maintain long term sobriety through regular practice of the Marshak Method’s nutritional, physical, and psychological principles.

Family Program Description

The Family Support Program Because addiction is a family disease, it is essential to provide family members with relevant information and education about what to do, and what not to do to help their recovering family member maintain sobriety. The Family Support Program is held on the second weekend of a client’s stay at the Clinic and lasts for 2-1/2 days. We strongly encourage the families and/or close friends of our clients to participate as the Family Support Program includes educational lectures about the nature of addiction and co-dependency, an introduction to the Marshak Method treatment modalities, a chance to participate in the Marshak Method exercise sessions, and take a Marshak diet cooking class. The family members meet with the Marshak Clinic therapists to discuss their family member’s recovery progress, and his or her personal treatment plan. During this time the family members will have an opportunity to discus their individual problems and questions with the therapists. At the end of the Family Support Program, the family participates in a family session with their recovering family member, the goal of which is to prepare the family to accept the client’s new personality and start building a new relationship.
