The First One To Leave Was Her Own Dad (A Song for Single Mothers) |
|
There are so many ways that alcoholism and addiction lead to single-parent families that I don't know where to start. For example, about 88% of the people in prisons...men and women alike, are there because of crimes they committed while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Then there are just the numer of people who kill themselves (and others) on the road every year while under the influence of some chemical...about 50,000. The top five factors leading to divorce are addiction, infidelity, money problems, in-law problems, and differences in religious belief. At least the first three are often directly related to alcoholism and addiction. When I wrote the song below I had been attending Al-Anon meetings with mostly women for the past seventeen years. I had heard so many single mothers "share" at meetings that I could finally begin to relate. The song below was written by my hand, yes, but it was experienced by a host of others. Here's hoping the song touches you, and that you will read other posts on this blog that will lead you to find help if you are living this song. Please...get yourself to a local meeting of Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics, or Nar-A-Non if this is you! Find a meeting only a few miles from your front door by calling 1-888-4Al-Anon, or access their web site at www.al-anonalateen.org.
