Alternative to 12-step recovery?

In all the talk about recovery from addiction, all I ever hear about is meetings and 12-step. It seems that all recovering addicts and alcoholics have become religious and embraced Christianity - for the most part. Is there any other way? I think to myself that there has to be a non 12-step, non religious way to remain in safe recovery from addiction. I am a nurse and was trained to believe the patient's statement of pain level. My husband started with alcohol, which he said he'd quit when we married. Of course he didn't. Then he 'hurt' his back. Oh what luck he had, a sympathetic wife. When he couldn't 'control' himself with managing his pain medications i was conviently there to administer them properly. I've been hearing a lot of opinions recently about these super rich celebrities going into rehab that operates more as a vacation home than a drug and alcohol treatment facility.
I don't know what's going on at theses ultra exclusive rehabs in Malibu where enough money will buy someone a day off to get a tan, a private romp around the house with the chef, or sneak out fora private party with 1,000 closest friends, drugs, and alcohol - then declare success and rehabilit [...]
