First there was “Cocaine” the energy drink released last year. Now “Meth Coffee,” the latest product named after a drug, is aimed at enticing energy addicts.

“Meth Coffee” doesn’t actually contain meth, but that’s not stopping Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan from putting her foot down. She is banning the sale of “Meth Coffee” in the state of Illinois, insisting the drink glorifies drug use.

Madigan says “Meth Coffee” violates the Illinois Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act because of its comparison to illicit drugs.

But the ban is not intimidating the San Francisco-based makers of “Meth Coffee,” who have posted a response on their website. The response states:

“(Meth Coffee) was never marketed or sold in stores in Illinois, and it is now no longer available online for purchase from, or shipment to, Illinois. Meth Coffee was founded by a group of comedians, artists, and rebels, some of whom are in recovery from methamphetamines.
For us, recovery from addiction is no joke — but Meth Coffee is.”

The coffee hit the market in January selling mainly online.

Over the last year, Lisa Madigan’s office has issued similar cease and desist orders against the Cocaine energy drink as well as an energy drink powder called Blow and Pot-suckers lollipops.
