Alternative to 12-step recovery?

In all the talk about recovery from addiction, all I ever hear about is meetings and 12-step. It seems that all recovering addicts and alcoholics have become religious and embraced Christianity - for the most part. Is there any other way? I think to myself that there has to be a non 12-step, non religious way to remain in safe recovery from addiction. I am not in recoverymyself, but I can certainly empathize with those who do not embrace organized religion. I know that recovery from addiction and the 12-step methodology do not require a pious participant, but faith still seems to play a very major role in recovery from addiction and alcoholism - based on the testimonials of all those I have encountered.
But still, there has to be another, successful way to be in recovery without the religion or the 12-step. There are addiction treatment centers that offer treatment methods as an alternative to the 12-step, so there's got to be aftercare adopting a similar philosophy. I think any way that paves the path to recovery is awsome and should be embraced, but it's curious to me why I never hear about any alternative measures to recovery.
