Marijuana is the most commonly abused substance and is often not as dangerous or addictive as many other drugs and alcohol.  Marijuana abuse, while generally not life threatening can be a big problem for numerous people.  While the argument of legalizing marijuana continues to rage on, it is still illegal and reckless use of marijuana can lead to some severe and dangerous situations. Street names: pot, mary jane, gangster, chronic, herb, weed, grass, boom.

Marijuana is a mind-altering drug, meaning that is changes how the brain works.

Contains THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and 400 other chemicals.

Usually smoked like a cigarette (joint or nail), a pipe or a bong.

THC can be found by urine testing days after smoking marijuana.

Short-term effects are memory and learning problems, loss of motor coordination, trouble thinking and problem solving, increased heart rate.

Long-term effects are cancer, coughing and wheezing, lung infections, damage to the cells and tissues in the body that help protect against disease.
