Christian Recovery

Christian recovery is one of the most popular options for drug addicts who are trying to get sober.  Many drug addicts work their way through several types of programs before settling into a Christian recovery program and, finally, achieving sobriety.  What makes a Christian addiction recovery program better than one that is not based on faith? There are a few theories about this.  This article will introduce the concept of Christian recovery and explain what makes it better than the plethora of alternatives out there.

Christian recovery and secular drug addiction recovery, on the surface, are very similar.  Secular drug addiction recovery forces a drug addict to give up his or her drug (addiction) of choice and choose a life in which he or she will continue to abstain from the drug.  The therapy process will involve individual therapy sessions with a counselor as well as group therapy sessions with other people who are trying to conquer drug addictions.  The drug addiction therapy can take place on-site while the patient stays in a monitored and controlled environment or it can take place off-site while the patient lives at home or with friends and then attends regular meetings or clinic appointments. 

Christian recovey works in much the same way.  Drug or alcohol addicts can be checked into a drug treatment center and go through the "getting sober" process on site, or they can live at home and work on getting sober via an out patient program at a local church or clinic.  In addition to individual and group therapy sessions, Christian drug addiction recovery involves bible study and lessons on the teachings of Jesus Christ.  Counselors and teachers will instruct drug addicts based on bible lessons and lessons from biblical scholars and philosophers.  It is also common for a Christian drug addiction recovery center to require patients to attend regular church services and to do volunteer work in their communities.

Here are two different types of Christian addiction recovery philosophies:

12 Steps:  The twelve steps are probably the most famous form of Christian recovery program in the world.  The twelve steps have been adopted by alcoholics anonymous as their "official" road map toward sobriety and are implemented in various ways in drug and alcohol addiction recovery programs all over the world.  The twelve steps gives addicts steps that they must complete, in order, to become sober.  "Working the steps" is a method that many ex-addicts swear by.

Replacement Therapy:  Replacement therapy is a method used by many Christian recovery programs that teaches addicts how exchange their drug addictions for God addictions.  The program helps addicts lead a sober lifestyle while channeling an addictive personality toward spiritual living and Bible study. 

There are quite a few drug addicts out there who have had several relapses on their journey toward sobriety and a staggering amount of these ex-addicts swear that the Christ based approach to drug addiction recovery is what finally helped them get sober.  The fact is that Christian recovery offer things that other, secular, recovery programs do not offer.  When a person enters a Christian drug addiction treatment center, they are welcomed into a like minded community of people and it is the strength from this community that helps them get better.  This community experience can then be reclaimed in the "outside" world by regular church attendance at the church of the addict's choice.  The built in system of social support provides positive pressure and helps the addict stay sober.

When it comes to choosing a Christian recovery center there are several options.  First the drug addict needs to decide whether or not he or she will be best served by an in-patient or an out-patient program.  If a strong support system is already in place, an out patient program should work well.  If the addict needs a more structured environment, an in-patient addiction recovery program is best.  From there the drug addict needs to decide which kind of therapy will work best.  Will he do better with a confrontational approach or a more comforting approach to facing his addiction and getting better?  Choosing a Christian drug treatment center takes some research but it is time that is well spent.  One example of a popular Christian recovery program is Transformations Treatment Center in Delray Beach, Florida. 

The truth is that Christian drug addiction recovery invokes something that most other drug addiction recovery centers do not: faith.  People find comfort in faith and the teachings of Jesus Christ.  When a drug addict realizes that he is not alone in the universe, he stands a better chance of achieving sobriety and living a drug free life.  Christian recovery programs help drug addicts understand the divine and their connection to it.
